to・Make™ Press was founded by the artist and map-maker Steven R Holloway to pursue and practice right map-making for a future to be possible. Located in the inter-mountain west in Missoula, Montana, the press editions original lithographs, relief, monoprints & letterpress maps and prints.
Artistic Statement
My work as an artist and geographer arises from stopping to observe & bear witness. It is a response to the interwoven polyphonic events that comprise the time-place. My responses arise from this effort to stop and to listen to the place itSelf, to make direct contact with and in the One Body; a practice of Right Action for a future to be possible. YA) the experience of being awake. I make hand-editioned maps, images, artist books, broadsides & performances. My maps, prints and images are stories hung on argument, whose hero is the experience of the place, whose heroine is the present moment and whose canvas takes you places you've never been and back. My work involves fieldwork, repeated visits over periods of time that may extend to a year, and often more. It arises from a need, gathered directly from the original mind in the presence of light, colour, sound, line, shape and movement. In this manner I understand my work to reflect an act of disobedience on behalf of the world beautiful.
